WHY KUSA REGISTERED DOGS?

Why should dogs be registered?  I like to think that in this day and age of technology and information overload that anybody who wanted to breed a dog of any description would like to have “papers”.  Surely if you want to call your dog a specific breed then you must be able to see who his mother and father are at the very least? When I bought my very first Rottweiler in 1987 I only knew that I wanted “papers” – the vet still said to me, “So you want a piece of paper that says that your dog a dog?” – I replied “EXACTLY!”

With large breed  dogs like Rottweilers, Hip and Elbow dysplasia has been largely contained due to the rules and regulations surrounding all breeding dogs being scanned for this very debilitating disease – You remember that old dog that you had as a child that couldn’t get up anymore – most probably HIP DISPLASIA – so that is what we are trying to prevent.

KUSA is only registering authority in SA that monitors the hip and elbow results of Rottweilers and limits breeding of unsuitable candidates accordingly.  There are a couple of other organisations that ‘register” dogs, including Rottweilers – those papers mean nothing – the dogs are not tested and they do not have to have a microchip – the dog presented could as well be the next door neighbour’s dog – who would be any the wiser.

Of course nothing is guaranteed – lots of unregistered puppies that I have seen in my life ended up looking a lot better than some dogs “with papers” – the point is that if they had been registered they would have been great dogs instead of nameless, faceless orphans with nowhere to go except down the drain – PLEASE DON’T BE “THAT GUY” – the guy with the beautiful puppies that don’t have “papers” – OK – everybody get it now?
